The biosynthesis of caffeine in the coffee plant

<br/><br/> Leaf disks of Coffeu arabica were infiltrated simultaneously with L-methionine-(methyl-t4C)and with various possible precursors of caffeine biosynthesis. The results permit the iirentification of theabromine, ?-mekh- yiKanthine and 7-methylxanthosine as precursors of caffeine. 7-merhylguanosine seems not to he an intermediatein caffeine formation.
